Malocclusion in rabbits refers to a condition where the teeth become misaligned (both incisors and molars can grow excessively). There are various causes, including genetic factors, dietary problems, and environmental issues. Rabbits may become unable to eat hay or hard foods, their overgrown teeth may injure their cheeks and tongue, they may drool excessively, and their forelimbs and jaws may become dirty.

At our clinic, we use a microscope to examine the oral cavity of rodents, which cannot be seen with the naked eye. If necessary, we perform a comprehensive diagnosis using X-rays.

Then, after immobilizing the tooth with anesthesia, the tooth is cut and polished using dental instruments, and the procedure is completed.

The human mouth has a pH of 6.5-7.0, making it slightly acidic, while a dog's mouth has a pH of 8.5-9.0, making it alkaline.

While it may be difficult for cavity-causing bacteria to multiply and thus less likely to cause cavities, conversely, plaque calcifies and tartar forms much faster in an alkaline environment, approximately eight times faster.

In some cases, treatment may be necessary for periapical lesions (facial swelling, external dental fistula) or oronasal fistulas caused by severe periodontal disease. Continuously swallowing saliva contaminated with tartar also increases the risk of kidney failure and heart failure.

The treatment will be performed using ultrasound.

After removal, a hand scaler is used to treat any remaining plaque. Finally, the tooth surface is polished with an abrasive. This smooth polishing helps to prevent tartar buildup. (However, some discoloration may not be completely removed.)
*If periodontal disease is advanced or if the patient is elderly, we may recommend pre-operative medication such as antibiotics during a prior consultation. Please consult us as soon as possible to prevent further progression.
