Lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD)

Lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is a general term for diseases related to the urethra and bladder (lower urinary tract), and includes conditions that cause urinary tract stones and inflammation of the bladder.

At our clinic, we identify the type of urinary stone through urine testing and recommend appropriate treatment, medication, and prescription diets. Struvite and calcium oxalate are the most common types of urinary stones, and treatment methods vary depending on the type, size, and location of the stone.

Feline lower urinary tract disease can involve the formation of crystals and stones in the urinary tract, which can cause a variety of painful conditions. Struvite crystals in the urine can combine with mucus to form urethral plugs (if the urinary tract becomes blocked, emergency treatment is necessary. Leaving it untreated can be life-threatening, so please contact your veterinarian immediately if you observe any of the following symptoms.)

Symptoms of feline lower urinary tract disease

If you observe the following symptoms, feline lower urinary tract disease may be suspected. Please consult a veterinarian.

  • Urinating outside of a toilet (inappropriate urination)

  • Straining during urination (this can be mistaken for constipation)

  • Loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence)

  • Frequent urination (usually only small amounts of urine are produced)

  • Pink or dark-colored urine or blood in the urine

  • They cry/make sounds as if they are in pain when they are trying to urinate.

  • Licking the genitals
